Mountain Hardwear Solidus Fleece Jacket Review

At Outdoor Retailer last summer, I was given a Solidus jacket from Mountain Hardwear. Now that the weather has finally turned colder here in Northern California, I have been practically living in this fleece jacket both indoors and out.

The Solidus jacket is made from Polartec Power Stretch fabric. This breathable, four-way stretch fabric features a durable, smooth outer layer that is wind and abrasion resistant with a water repellent coating. A soft inner layer helps to pull moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry, warm and comfortable. Separate Power Stretch side panels add extra breathability where you need it most.

The fitted fleece jacket is nice and long through both the arms and the torso, making it harness friendly. The two side pockets are also set up a bit higher to keep them out of the way of your harness or backpack hipbelt.

My favorite feature of the Solidus jacket has to be the balaclava type helmet compatible hood. You get full neck, ear and lower face protection when the jacket is fully zipped up. The thumb holes are a nice touch as well and help to keep your wrists or hands warm.

Bottom Line: The Mountain Hardwear Solidus jacket offers a perfect combination of the warmth and stretch of a fleece with the weather protection of a softshell. This fleece jacket makes a great outer layer for active cold weather sports such as snowshoeing or climbing and can be worn as a warm mid layer paired with a hardshell during rougher weather.

The Mountain Hardwear Solidus jacket retails for $150. Backcountry is currently having a sale on the fleece jacket for only $89.97.
