POC AVIP Road Cycling Gear

POC AVIP Road Cycling Gear

Swedish company POC, best known for their snow sport and downhill mountain biking gear, is finally making the leap into road cycling. With the new AVIP (Attention, Visibility, Interaction, Protection) line of helmets, apparel, and accessories, POC extends their safety expertise and clean design ethos into the roadie world.

The star of the POC AVIP collection is the new Octal helmet ($270). At under 200 grams, the Octal is incredibly light but no less safe than any other bike helmet. To cut out weight, POC ditched the usual internal Kevlar structure for a soft and thick EPS foam liner wrapped in a protective unibody shell. The temple area and back of the head are beefed up for extra impact protection.

Large and strategically place vents throughout the bike helmet increase airflow across your head in order to keep you cool. In line with the classic POC look, the Octal helmet comes in high visibility colors such as bright orange and white, with all POC logos acting as reflective patches. For all you time trialers or cyclocross fanatics, POC will also offer a full coverage version called the Octal Aero ($299).

POC AVIP Essentials

POC’s first line of high performance road specific apparel, AVIP Essentials, unites safety details with minimalist style. The line includes premium bib shorts and short sleeve jerseys for men and women. The long sleeve jersey, wind vest, spring jacket, and a three-layer laminated DWR rain jacket are all unisex (not sure how I feel about this one). The line also includes a breathable and windproof light wind vest and light wind jacket that both pack up incredibly small.

POC focused on the small details across the entire apparel line, such as using multiple reflective elements and placing a small “My Info” pocket on the back of the jacket to house your id or wallet in case of an accident. The prices on the AVIP Essentials road cycling apparel line will range from $170-$200.

Accessories include performance sunglasses, gloves, leg and arm warmers, socks, a cap, and what every good Euro rider should have – an Italian silk neck scarf. All POC AVIP road cycling products will hit the stores by March 2014.
