Last week, Delorme announced their latest product release- the inReach Explorer. In addition to the usual messaging, tracking, and SOS capabilities, the Explorer adds a whole new range of technology and navigational functions, meaning now you need only to take one rugged, waterproof device with you on your next adventure.

The inReach Explorer adds a digital compass, barometric altimeter, and accelerometer in order to deliver a full range of navigational features. You can view, create, or navigate routes and waypoints, all displayed on an easy to follow map. If you want to sketch out all of your routes and waypoints ahead of time, head on over to the Delorme Explore portal to plan your trip.

The portal includes your dedicated MapShare page, where friends and family can follow along on your adventures, as well as exchange messages with you between tracking intervals. Tracking intervals can be adjusted from 2 minutes to four hours.

Using DeLorme’s Earthmate App, your inReach Explorer pairs with your smartphone to access map data and send text messages. When paired with your phone, you have unlimited access to DeLorme’s topographic maps and U.S. NOAA charts that remain accessible even in the no service zone.

In the event of an emergency, the interactive SOS capability automatically triggers remote tracking and allows you to communicate via text back and forth with responders at the international 24/7 search- and-rescue monitoring center.

The Delorme inReach Explorer retails for $379, shipping in May. Good news for those who only what to use the device for a few months of the year – Delorme announced the new Freedom subscription plan, allowing you to pay for satellite service on a monthly basis ($14.95-$99.95 per month). Standard annual contract plans range from $11.95 to $79.95 per month.
