Forget Vanlife — Get a Hunting Shack Instead

Hunting Shack

A new division of the Tiny House Building Company in Virginia, The Alpine hunting shack is designed to be your home away from home in the outdoors. This 16-foot tiny house hooks onto the trailer hitch of your car, and is not much longer or wider than your average camper trailer. Given that it can cost less than a brand new sprinter cargo van build out, this might be the next level up for all us vanlife dreamers.

The Alpine hunting shack features both a comfortable living room and a large functional porch — imagine yourself at the end of a great day playing outdoors, enjoying a cold beverage out on your own little front porch. The hunting shack is made from yellow pine walls and ceiling, with a king sized loft bedroom and second twin sized loft for additional sleeping or storage space.

You get a fully equipped kitchen, complete with induction cooktop, large sink, refrigerator, and hickory cabinets. The bathroom has a large shower and dry flush toilet. The numerous windows give you an open and airy feeling to cut down on rainy day claustrophobia. Electric split unit heating and cooling systems are available, as well as pellet stoves, propane heaters, wood stoves, and even ceiling fans. For off-grid models, generators and solar panels are available.

Most of the hunting shack models have traditional RV-style hook-ups to receive water directly to the plumbing systems. However, if you do not have any utilities available (which is most likely for all of us outdoor types), there is an off-grid utility set up available that includes a freshwater holding tank, along with black and gray water holding tanks.

The Alpine hunting shacks range in price from $25,000-$45,000, depending on your customizations. And don’t forget you’ll need at least a 3/4 ton vehicle capacity to pull it around — yes, your Subaru Outback will do the job just fine.
