Beer For Better Biking in The Capital

Rally Cry

Just in case you thought the DC bike scene couldn’t get any hipper, the city now has its own beer to fund the expansion of a huge bike trail network. The hoppy masterpiece is the result of a partnership between REI, Atlas Brew Works, and DC Brau, where all proceeds from the sale of Rally Cry IPA will go towards the Washington Area Bicyclist Association in support of the Capital Trails Coalition.

While Patagonia is no stranger to collaboration beers, this is a first for REI. The Rally Cry IPA is just the icing on a $500,000 funding grant that REI gave to the Capital Trails Coalition as part of the Co-op’s yearly outdoor programs and outreach — over 70% of REI”s profits are given back local communities to support the outdoor spaces where members love to play.

Using the money, the Capital Trails Coalition plans to connect more than 360 miles of hiking and biking trails surrounding the DC area. That’s pretty amazing. Beer sales will also go towards this initiative.

Rally Cry IPA is a session IPA that was designed to refresh you after a nice long bike ride — it also makes a great shower beer. It’s brewed and canned by local brewery Atlas Brew Works, with Falconers Flight and Cascade hops donated by DC Brau, Synergy Pilsen malt donated by Breiss, and cans donated by Can Source. The beer will be sold at REI’s DC flagship store as well as at other stores and bars in the DC area. A six pack should go for around $10-$11.

So who in the DC area is going to hook me up?! There was an official launch at the REI DC store yesterday but for the rest of you in the city, you can head to Wunder Garten on Tuesday night to try it out. There will be music and food trucks, too!
