Better Than a Rock: The Ultralight Backpacking Stool

Hillsound Equipment, best known for their trail crampons and gaiters, has come out with a new accessory for outdoor adventures. The BTR stool, which stands for Better Than a Rock, is a lightweight seat for your outdoor adventures.

When backpacking, most of us resign ourselves to sitting on the nearest rock or even the ground when taking a break or hanging around camp in the evening. Needless to say, this is usually pretty uncomfortable. Hillsound decided to make it more enticing to bring along a place to sit on your next outdoor adventure by creating a stool that is both lightweight and compact.

The BTR stool is available in two sizes, 14 inches and 17 inches, with the 14-inch version weighing a light 12.2 ounces and the 17-inch version coming in at 13.7 ounces. The seats are made from 100% nylon mesh and can be removed (to wash or replace), while the poles are comprised of lightweight yet durable aluminum alloy. The 11-inch and 13-inch width of the seat (depending on size) ensures the stools are comfortable to sit on for long periods of time.

The BTR stool also features Hillsound’s PhantomLock Technology that secures the telescoping legs of the stool when they are dispersed while also allowing the legs to retract when returned to a neutral position without the use of buttons or levers. The stools can hold up to 265 pounds of weight.

Hillsound is running a Kickstarter campaign to take pre-orders for the BTR stool. They are available in three different colors — orange, black, and blue — with prices starting at $50. Expected ship date is February 2020.
