Montane Spektr-World’s Lightest eVent Shell Jacket

Montane's new Spektr Smock is pushing the limits of ligntweight waterproof breathable shell jackets. Designed for major summit assaults and mountain marathons, the Spektr may be super light but does not compromise on that expected hardshell performance.

Made from eVent 3-layer fabric, the Montane Spektr can handle the most demanding of weather conditions while offering top levels of breathability. In pursuit of weight reduction and better packability, Montane came up with the innovative Tornado roll closure system for the shell jacket and did away with any zippers.

The peak-free hood is designed to be worn with a waterproof cap. A storage pocket within the hood itself lets you stow away your cap when not needed. The slim fitting Spektr shell jacket comes with laminated, pre-adjusted hood, cuff and waist cinches so an automatic weather proof seal is created around you.

Weighing just 210 grams, the Montane Spektr is a bit heavier than the 166 gram waterproof breathable Triumph Anorak from The North Face but you are getting a 3-layer eVent full shell jacket. The Tornado dry-bag like closure system may take some getting used to but everyone who tried it on at the OutDoor Show said it was easy to get the hang of rolling over the fabric and fastening with loops and hooks.

The Montane Spektr shell jacket will be available for Spring 2011. What are your thoughts- getting rid of zippers and automatic cinches a good idea for cutting out unnecessary weight?
