Garmin’s Most Advanced Handheld GPS To Date

Garmin Montana Garmin Montana

For the new Montana series, Garmin is looking to incorporate some key smartphone functionality into a rugged handheld GPS unit. With features for driving, boating, hiking and even geocaching, the Garmin Montana is not only tough and versatile, but the most advance Garmin handheld to date.

The Montana features a 4 inch color touchscreen display which is sunlight readable and shows in both portrait and landscape orientations. In the 650 and 650t models, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera enables you to take pictures on the trail that are automatically geotagged with your location.

A built in microSD card slot lets you load a wealth of different maps onto the handheld GPS including TOPO, marine, road and BirdsEye Satellite. This means you can use your Garmin Montana for a variety of adventures including driving to the trailhead, finding your way up the mountain or sailing over the weekend. Durable and waterproof, this handheld GPS is built to take a beating and withstand the elements.

The barometric altimeter can help you profile your climbing or hiking route using the included worldwide elevation model. To further help with navigation, the 3-axis tilt-compensated electric compass gives you a correct heading even if you are not holding your handheld GPS level.

For all your geocachers out there, the Garmin Montana supports downloading of geocaching GPX files straight to the unit. The handheld GPS stores and displays key information including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions of a particular geocache.

One of the cooler features of the Montana is the ability to share your waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches wirelessly with other compatible Garmin handheld GPS users. The Montana comes with multiple accessory options for mounting and power, including a thin lithium ion battery pack for use on day trips or AA batteries for use in the backcountry.

The Garmin Montana retails for $550 (600), $630 (650) and $700 (650t) and is available for pre-order to start shipping soon.
