10 Haunted Outdoor Spots For Halloween

Point Sur Lighthouse

In honor of Halloween today, we have compiled a list of 10 different reportedly haunted spots in the great outdoors. Instead of heading to a fake haunted house today, set out on a lovely hike that may just scare your pants off as well.

1. Point Sur Lighthouse

Allegedly one of the most haunted places in the US, this National Historic Landmark is a dominating feature along the famed Highway 1 in California, just 5 miles North of Big Sur Village. The most prominent ghost resident appears to be the old 19th-century lighthouse keeper, often seen inside the visitors center.

Tenaya Canyon, Yosemite

2. Tenaya Canyon, Yosemite

Tenaya Canyon is the supposed Bermuda Triangle of Yosemite. A disproportionate number of accidents happen in this area, where no one is immune. Hikers, climbers, rescuers, and even John Muir himself have all had bad accidents here. The area is named after Yosemite Valley's Chief Tenaya who, after witnessing the murder of his youngest son, delivered a curse to Captain John Bowling saying his spirit would forever haunt the natural world around them.

Brown Mountain Lights

3. Brown Mountin Lights

Brown Mountain is a long ridge in Western North Carolina, with the majority lying in Pisgah National Forest. For over 800 years, ghostly lights have been seen creeping along and below the ridge at night. Some of the earliest reports came from the Cherokee and Catawba Indians, with witnesses to the spectacle still today.

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

4. Mammoth Cave

Located in Kentucky, Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world, with over 300 miles documented. Stephen Bishop, one of the first and most popular cave guides, is said to still haunt the corridors today, looking to guide lost people to safety. A slave, who is said to have refused freedom for fear of having to leave his cave, Bishop discovered many unknown passages and drew many maps that are still used today.

Transept Trail, Grand Canyon

5. The Grand Canyon

Along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, a female ghost in a white dress with blue flowers is said to wander the Transept Trail. She can be heard wailing in the night and slams the Grand Canyon Lodge door shut every time it is left open.

Aokigahara Forest

6. Aokigahara Forest

Lying at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan, the Aokigahara Forest has a historic association with demons in Japanese Mythology and is now, sadly, a popular place for suicides. With very dense trees, little wind, and the absence of wildlife, the forest is eerily quiet.

The Overtoun Bridge

7. The Overtoun Bridge

During the past half-century, some 50 dogs have leapt to their deaths from this historic bridge in Scotland. All the deaths occurred at the same spot, between the final two parapets on the right side of the bridge. The bridge is rumored to be haunted and many believe the dogs were spooked by some supernatural force emanating from the bridge that caused them to jump.

Mount Chitlan

8. Koh-I-Chitlan

This peak, located in Pakistan, is said to be haunted with the spirits of forty babies. Legend has it that a couple, unable to have offspring, visited a local priest seeking his blessing. Afterwards, the couple had forty children, where the husband disposed of 39 of them on the mountain as they were too much to handle. The wife tried to use the 40th child to lure back the other 39 but the last child disappeared from the summit of Koh-I-Chitlan in the process.

Bluff Mountain, Appalachian Trail

9. Bluff Mountain

Regular Appalachian Trail hikers will tell you about the ghost of Ottie Cline Powel roaming the trail near the summit of Bluff Mountain. Aged only 4, Ottie wandered away from his school building in 1891 while out looking for firewood. He never returned and his body was later found in the exact spot where the marker still stands today.

Hoia Baciu Forest, Romania

10. Hoia Baciu Forest

Called the Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania, the Hoia Baciu Forest is a famous spot in Romania. Many inexplicable paranormal phenomena happen in the forest, including the feeling of being watched, lights in the middle of the night, human faces in photographs, strange voices, and even UFO sightings.
