SPOT Gen3 Satellite Messenger

SPOT Gen3 Satellite Messenger

This week, SPOT announced the availability of their third generation satellite messenger, the Gen3. Along with all the standard functionality such as S.O.S notification, the latest SPOT device offers more tracking features and better battery performance for the next time you head out into the no service zone.

One of the biggest enhancements in the SPOT Gen3 is with the three different types of tracking available. Unlimited Tracking lets you pre-set the satellite messenger to send your whereabouts every 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes. For those who are covering a large amount of ground in a short amount of time, Extreme Tracking enables you to send your coordinates every 2 1/2 minutes.

Finally, the Motion Activated Tracking setting will only push your tracks out at the chosen rate when the device is actually turned on and moving. This way your friends and family won't see repeated messages while you are taking a lunch break on the trail.

SPOT has upped the ante on the battery life, pushing it to about twice as long as the previous SPOT satellite messengers. You can also choose between using 4 AAA Lithium batteries, NiMH rechargeable batteries, or direct USB power connection.

The SPOT Gen3 satellite messenger works around the world, including North America, Mexico, Europe, Australia, Northern and Central Africa, portions of South America and North-Eastern Asia. You can find the full coverage list on the SPOT website

SPOT Gen3 retails for $149.95, plus a required annual subscription service starting at $149.99 per year with upgraded service plans available.
