At Eurobike this week, Garmin will be unveiling their new Edge 800 cycling computer. With the addition of a touchscreen color display and improvement in the route planning software, the new Edge 800 will be the go to cycling computer for both road and mountain bike riders.
If you are a die hard Nokia fan, there may finally be a smartphone cycling computer solution for you. This week at CTIA in Las Vegas, a start-up called Bike Dashboard won the Push N900 MOD IN THE USA prize. Contestants were asked to connect the N900 smartphone to something they love using the device's open source Maemo software.
After debuting at Eurobike and then Interbike last summer, Polar
is finally set to release the new CS500 cycling computer. A sleek new functional design coupled with Polar's classic heart rate monitoring technology, this cycling computer will be a must have for the ambitious cyclist looking to improve their performance this season. After a great deal of customer frustration, the CS500 will be Polar's first product that is Mac compatible. I hear you cheering but don't get too excited just yet.
The standards race to turn smartphones into sports accessories has heated up and it appears that ANT+, used by SRAM, Garmin, Adidas and others might win. As we mentioned in an earlier post, Polar has OEMed their technology to Nokia and developed a Bluetooth based Heart Rate Monitor to connect to a Nokia smartphone. Now a new Minnesota company, Pedal Brain, is offering an ANT+ accessory and application that will turn your iPhone or iPod into a full blown cycling computer.
