The Bergmonch BackPack Turned Downhill Scooter

Bergmonch

For those of you who, like me, absolutely hate the downhill part of a climb, witness the Bergmonch. Climbing uphill, it's carried like a backpack. Once at the top, the pack can be converted into a rugged downhill scooter within two minutes, all without the use of tools.

Developed by Thomas Kaiser and Christian Wassermann, the Bergmonch quickly made waves in the outdoor industry after the young designers won the ISPO BrandNew Award 09. Soon after, Dutch cycling firm Koga signed on to be manufacturer and exclusive distributor of the Bergmonch. It is interesting to note that the ISPO BrandNew Award winners are generally a good indicator of a successful idea or product.

The Bergmonch backpack itself is specially designed by Vaude and the downhill scooter includes a hand built, full suspension aluminum frame. Two different sized Schwalbe wheels, Shimano disc brakes and adjustable air shock all contribute to superb handling and safety downhill.

Weighing 9 kilos, the downhill scooter is lighter and easier to carry uphill than your own bike and a much better training option than stuffing your pack full of water bottles or bird seed. The one catch- you can only stand or kneel on the descent as there is no seat.

For a retail of €1499, it comes out at around the same price of a normal mountain bike but possibly way more fun. I absolutely can't wait to try one!
