LifeBEAM Cycling Helmet With Integrated Heart Rate Sensor

Lifebeam Smart cycling helmet

Quite a bit of biometric information can be acquired from your forehead. Israeli company LifeBEAM learned how best to capture this wealth of physiological data through remotely monitoring the health of many Air Force and Aerospace units around the world. Similar in concept to the Spree Headband but much more conspicuous, LifeBeam has now integrated a biometric sensor into a Lazer cycling helmet in order to capture your heart rate data without the use of a chest strap.

The LifeBeam Smart technology platform is lightweight (50 grams) and incorporates a microprocessor combined with an advanced algorithm, a state-of-the-art optical physiological sensor, accelerometer, and full wireless communication capabilities. Originally developed for fighter pilots & astronauts, LifeBeam has now integrated the technology into the Lazer Genesis helmet for the company’s first foray into the consumer fitness world.

LifeBeam Smart Heart Rate Cycling Helmet

Smart uses electro-optical technology to continuously measure your heart-rate. The optical sensor is placed on the helmet’s front, gently touching your forehead. The sensor samples your blood pulse in a high frequency and transmits a raw signal to the processing unit that is placed in the helmet’s back. The processing unit filters the signal from your physical motion, and using the communication module, wirelessly transmits your true pulse to your bike computer in real-time.

The information gathered by Smart communicates in real time with your mobile phone, sport watch, or cycling computer via ANT+ or Bluetooth 4.0. The rechargeable Lithium battery will last for up to 15 hours of continuous usage. LifeBEAM hopes that the Smart technology platform will enable future sensing, sound, and display features.

For $149, you can be one of the first 200 people to try out the Smart cycling helmet with integrated heart rate sensor. Delivery is estimated for September 2013.
