Borealis Yampa Fat Bike

Borealis Yampa Fat Bike

Fat bikes are generally heavy and handle much like a tractor, meaning only the strongest of riders can really get the most out of the bike. New company Borealis Bikes is on a mission to make everyone fall in love with riding fat bikes by creating extremely lightweight and versatile frames, almost on par with your standard road bike.

The inaugural Borealis Bikes model, the Yampa, weighs in at only 25 pounds for the standard build (the frame itself weighs only 1270 grams or 2.8 lbs). Compare that to a Surly Pugsley that can weigh around 35-40+ pounds depending on components. Achorage based co-owner Adam Miller said the company was currently building bikes weighing in around the low 20s even.

Borealis takes advantage of the strength, moldability, and lightweight nature of carbon fiber to build unique fat bike frames. Centered rear spacing is set at 190mm, the supposed new fat bike standard in the industry, with clearance for the largest tire and rim setup available.

A large bottom bracket and chainstay give lateral stiffness, while the tapered headtube, tapered fork, and 15mm thru axle make handling a breeze through technical terrain. The SRAM 2×10 drivetrain leaves room for the inevitable mud and snow buildup you will accumulate while you are out adventuring.

Three bottle cage mounts will come in handy for all those endurance events. Rear rack mounts enable you to add standard cargo racks and panniers to carry all your gear on multi-day rides.

Borealis Bikes is currently taking pre-orders for the two Yampa versions over on the company website, with prices ranging from $3599-$5549. Frame orders ($2249) and custom builds are also available in addition to the standard builds.

With some possible snow biking adventures in the works, I am super psyched to check these guys out at Interbike next week.
