Patagonia took their popular Capilene 4 expedition weight base layers and made them even better this season by creating a full one piece suit. Extremely warm and comfortable, the onsie will quickly become one of your favorite pieces of gear this winter.
Made from Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric, the onesie is the warmest base layer in the Patagonia Capilene family. A smooth face makes it easy to slip under your climbing or ski pants, while the internal brushed fleece waffle weave insulates, wicks moisture, and feels super soft against your skin.
When it gets super cold and windy, the high collar zips up in front of your face, acting almost like a neck gaiter to keep you cozy. Thumb loops secure the sleeves low and tight on your arms (guys- you even get thumb loops, too).
Two large side zips on the drop seat make it super easy to take a bathroom break, though not for the pee funnel enthusiasts. I would love to see the zip completely rim the drop seat, as the current big gaping flap on the top can enable snow and cold air to get down your base layer, especially when powder skiing.
I have heard some complaints from women that our version of the Cap 4 Onesie doesn't feature a hood like the men's. I personally don't want a hood on my base layer but some might. If so, you could try ordering a smaller men's version.
The Cap 4 material is synthetic (made from recycled polyester) so you will eventually run into the stink issue. However, the Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric is treated with Polygiene permanent odor control, so you can get a couple days wear out of the base layer before you will need to throw it in the wash.
Bottom Line: Most of us, when skiing or climbing, have our outer layers bunch up or get out of kilter at some point during the day.
