Espresso, Red Bull, Monster Energy – there are many different ways to get your daily caffeine fix. We all know that caffeine can positively affect athletic performance but what if you don't want all the sugar and exorbitantly high caffeine levels associated with some energy drinks? Meet Clean Energy- a slow release caffeine patch that will keep you buzzing along through your entire workout.

The Clean Energy Patch contains 100mg of Guarana, a natural caffeine source made from plant extract. Over the course of 8 hours, the patch will deliver 25mg of caffeine to your body, without the spikes and crashes associated with high sugar or high caffeine intake in a short period of time.

The amount of caffeine in the patch is equal to about 1/3 cup of coffee, or ironically a Starbucks Grande Brewed Decaf Coffee. By comparison, a shot of espresso has around 75mg of caffeine.

The Clean Energy Patch is simple to use- just peel off the backing and stick the patch on a hairless area of your body, like chest, lower back, shoulder or hip. You should start to feel the caffeine patch working within 30 minutes of applying. Remove the patch when desired, up to 8 hours later.

All you athletes will be happy to know you can not be held accountable for doping by wearing the caffeine patch. Clean Energy clocks in well below permissible caffeine levels established by the International Olympic Committee (equivalent of 12 cups) and the NCAA (15mg/mL, equivalent of 5 cups).

The question remains though, is 25mg enough to positively affect your performance? Louise M. Burke, the head of the sports nutrition department of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, reports that athletes get the full caffeine effect with at least 1mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. A 176-pound man would need to consume around 80mg of caffeine, the equivalent of 4 ounces of coffee or about two 12 ounce cans of Coke.

One Clean Energy Patch retails for $2.95, while a box of 24 will set you back $72. Personally, I would rather enjoy a nice cup of coffee but for a slight performance edge or that epic road trip, the caffeine patches might be worth a shot (pun intended). I can see the slow caffeine release being useful for full day alpine pursuits where you don't really have time to stop and eat let alone enjoy a warm beverage.
