Garmin Fenix 2 Multisport Training Watch

Garmin Fenix 2 Garmin Fenix 2

Wanting to appeal more to the multisport athlete, the new Fenix 2 from Garmin combines the best of both an outdoor and a fitness oriented watch. As an update to the navigation and tracking oriented Fenix, Garmin added plenty of multisport training functions and expanded smartphone connectivity in the Fenix 2.

Whether running, climbing, riding, hiking, skiing or swimming, Fenix 2 provides you with real-time feedback on your workout. One of the most interesting new training functions is the VO2 max estimator. When paired with a heart rate monitor, the watch crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute, and heart rate variability to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute.

Other training metrics include a recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a Race Predictor that estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number. When out for a run, the Fenix 2 can measure your running dynamics and display your cadence, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time to help you become more efficient.

The GPS watch can be used for swim training and skiing as well. Input the size of your training pool and the Fenix 2 will track your distance, pace, and stroke count. For all you pow hounds, the Ski-Board mode puts speed, distance, vertical drop, and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) at your fingertips.

Hikers and climbers will be happy to know that the Fenix 2 still employs all the navigation and tracking features of the original Fenix, such as altimeter, barometer, and a 3-axis compass. Create a bread crumb trail, mark waypoints, and navigate pre-set routes.

The waterproof and rugged Garmin Fenix 2 retails for $399.99 and is available now.
