Garmin Edge 1000 Cycling Computer

Garmin Edge 1000

One of the products I am excited to check out at Sea Otter this weekend is the latest cycling computer from Garmin- the Edge 1000. Basically taking the best from Edge Touring and Edge 810, Garmin then added a large, 3" high-res color touchscreen display, advanced smartphone connectivity, and Strava-esque segment features.

Garmin looks to be taking on Strava with the new segment and leaderboard capabilities on Garmin Connect. When out on a ride, the Edge 1000 bike computer alerts you to upcoming segments starts and finish points, with a Virtual Partner to let you know how you are doing compared to your PR or the current segment leader.

If you so desire, Edge 1000 will alert you to any incoming calls or texts, while a cool LiveTrack feature enables your friends or family to follow your activities in real time- great for any races. Bluetooth Smart and WiFi connectivity make for easy ride uploads to or downloads from Garmin Connect and sharing on social media.

Like Edge Touring, the Edge 1000 bike computer comes with preloaded maps and points of interest to help you navigate. Turn by turn directions guide you through a certain course and can also help figure out how to get you back to where you started. When riding in a new area, simply pick a mileage goal and Edge 1000 will calculate three bike friendly routes for you, including elevation profiles.

As expected, Edge 1000 is compatible with ANT+ sensors, including heart rate, power meters, and Garmin’s new speed and cadence sensors. Easy-to-install, the self-calibrating bike speed sensor tracks speed and distance when GPS is not available, and the magnet-less cadence sensor tracks pedaling strokes per minute. Interesting to note, Edge 1000 is also now compatible with Shimano Di2 electronic shifting systems to display current gear on the screen.

Garmin Edge 1000 retails for $599.99 or $699.99 including HRM3 and new speed/cadence sensors.
