Insect Shield Battles the Bugs

Insect Shield, the Greensboro, NC company, has been around for a few years but is now making big strides into the outdoor industry. Their patented repellent technology is behind OR's BugOut and BugAway lines, LL Bean Insect Shield ApparelBuff Headwear as well an upcoming REI tent and accessory line.

Insect Shield developed the 1st bug apparel and gear to be registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2003.  The odorless insect protection provided by Insect Shield Repellent Gear lasts through six months of constant exposure to weathering (sun/rain), 70 washings and is proven to repel mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and fleas. The active ingredient is permethrin, a human-made version of a natural insect repellent found in certain chrysanthemum plants, such as the African daisy. Using Insect Shield products supposedly reduces the need for topical bug repellents.

Expect to see them in many more outdoor apparel and gear lines to come.
