During Outdoor Retailer last week, Black Diamond officially launched their new Fall 2013 apparel collection to a room full of media, investors, and supply partners. Working with Schoeller, PrimaLoft, Polartec, and RECCO, Black Diamond has created three distinct collections addressing their core sports markets, taking you from the crag to the top of the mountain.
Starting from scratch, Black Diamond was in an envious position of being able to take a completely fresh look at design and component partners to create the ultimate collection in terms of fit, features, and product offering. Covering softshell, insulation, and fleece, the Fall 2013 Black Diamond apparel line can be divided into three distinct categories, comprised of 24 pieces in all.
For the Dawn Patrol collection, Black Diamond partnered with Schoeller to create a line of outerwear for ski, ski touring, and climbing. An example piece is the Dawn Patrol LT Shell ($279), pictured top. Made from Schoeller StretchWoven nylon with NanoSphere Technology, the streamlined softshell jacket includes an adjustable, helmet compatible hood, chest pocket, two interior drop pockets, media pocket, and two zippered hand pockets.
For the Stance and Access collections, Black Diamond teamed up with PrimaLoft to make an entire line of insulated layers. The Stance Belay Hoody ($229) is made from a DWR treated Pertex shell filled with 80 g/m2 of PrimaLoft Synergy insulation. Weighing 500 grams and easily compressible, this insulated hoody is a great belay jacket for those light and fast multi-pitch climb days.
Finally, for the fleece based Crag, Coefficient, and Solution collections, Black Diamond chose to work with fabric supplier Polartec. The Coefficient Hoody ($159), made from Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency, will not only keep you warm as a base or second layer, but is also breathable and dries quickly for those high intensity outdoor activity days.
The Black Diamond apparel collection ranges in price from $109-$399 and will most likely start shipping around August or September 2013. Expect to see lots more from Black Diamond in apparel. The company has already mapped out the next four seasons worth of new collections. Women will have to wait until Fall 2014 before our outerwear collection hits the market.
