Given that I received a BCA Tracker2 avalanche beacon for Christmas, I was a little worried to hear the recent news that Jackson Hole Ski Patrol and Alpine Guides have alerted BCA to a problem with the device. The group found that occasionally the Tracker2 avalanche beacons will inadvertently switch into opticomm mode and stop transmitting.
For Christmas, Santa brought me a complete set of avalanche tools including a BCA Tracker2 avalanche beacon, Black Diamond Quickdraw Guide Probeand Deploy 7 Shovel. As excited as I am to finally get out and have some backcountry fun, the gift got me thinking about avalanche awareness and how to travel smart in the backcountry.
According to Beacon Reviews, both Mammut and Pieps are rumored to be launching new avalanche transceivers at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer show next month. It looks as though these particular beacons won't be commercially available until Winter 2012 but hopefully I will get to play around with them in advance to share with you more details about the products.
