UK company Terra Nova has responded to the increasing demand for ultra light gear by developing the lightest double wall tent on the market. Weighing just 1 lb 1 oz, the Laser Ultra 1 will become the thru hiker and mountain marathoners tent of choice.
The Laser Ultra 1 takes advantage of Terra Nova’s new Cuben FIber based waterproof ULTRA fabric. The new ultra light tent is based on the company’s Laser Photon 1 with the nylon flysheet and floor replaced by the ULTRA fabric to shave off 6 oz. Technically a one person tent, you could cram two in the Laser Ultra 1 during an adventure race or in an emergency.
Cuben fiber is a non-woven fabric originally used in sail making but now working its way into outdoor applications such as the Granite Gear CTF3 Uberlight Dry Sacks or handmade ultra light backpacks and tents. The Cuben Fiber composite for outdoor applications usually includes Dyneema fibers sandwiched between two layers of polyester film.
The benefit of Cuben Fiber is its exceptional strength to weight ratio, which greatly exceeds that of any woven fabric like nylon or polyester. The fabric is also highly waterproof and UV sunlight resistant. Short comings of Cuben Fiber, however, are its lack of heavy abrasion resistance and strength reduction in sewn seams.
The Cuben Fiber version of the Big Sky Mirage 2P is a hybrid design with double wall sides and a waterproof breathable ceiling. The ultra light tent is roomy enough for two people with two side doors and two vestibules to allow for easy entry and exit. Including the DuraLite composite tent poles, the whole tent package weighs in at just 1 lb 15 oz.
