At Eurobike this week, Garmin announced their new Edge Explore 1000 bike computer geared towards tourers and general adventurers. Starting with a paired down version of the Edge 1000 in terms of advanced functionality, the new Explore still captures all your classic bike stats, but also adds cycling-specific map routing and points of interest.

Last week, Garmin announced their first set of underwater friendly heart rate monitors. The HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim feature compact designs for minimal drag through the water. Storing up to 20 hours of heart rate data during your swims, both devices forward this data on to a compatible Garmin device at the end of each session and can even send real-time heart rate data to your watch when the monitor is out of the water.
Lots of news coming from Garmin the past couple of weeks. Yesterday, the company announced Varia–a rearview bike radar that warns you of cars approaching and alerts cars of cyclists ahead. A great idea in theory but I am curious if this will really create a safer cycling environment in practice.
Yesterday, Garmin announced their smallest and lightest bike computers yet–the Edge 20 and the Edge 25. Capturing basic ride data, the new bike computers are for those cyclists who just want something simple and easy to read on their ride without taking up much space on the handlebars.
For the new Forerunner 225, Garmin teamed up with Mio Global to integrate an optical heart rate sensor. Much like the Mio Alpha and Link, you can now thankfully ditch the heart rate strap when heading out on your next run.
