At Eurobike this week, Garmin announced their new Edge Explore 1000 bike computer geared towards tourers and general adventurers. Starting with a paired down version of the Edge 1000 in terms of advanced functionality, the new Explore still captures all your classic bike stats, but also adds cycling-specific map routing and points of interest.
The Edge Explore 1000 comes preloaded with a set of Garmin Cycle Maps that feature routable road and bike paths, elevation data, points of interest, and address search. When you head out to a new location, the bike computer lets you discover routes based on the distance you want to ride and the direction you want to head out–simply enter that info into the device and it will give you three bike-friendly courses to choose from in return. You can also choose to create your own course right on the bike computer using the preloaded maps and points of interest or if you want to do all the planning before your trip, simply head to Garmin Connect.
When paired with your phone, the Edge Explore 1000 is the first Garmin device to offer incident detection via an integrated accelerometer–when you crash, the bike computer will automatically send your location (via text or email) to your set of pre-defined emergency contacts. In case you throw down your bike accidentally, you have 30 seconds to disable the alert.
The Edge Explore 1000 connects with all your ANT+ sensors, including power meters, heart rate monitors, speed and cadence sensors, and VIRB. It is also compatible with the new Varia line of devices, including the rearview bike radar and smart bike lights.
The large, high-resolution 3” capacitive touch display adjusts automatically for low-light riding conditions, offers up to 15 hours of battery life, and is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites for fast connection. When paired with your phone and the Garmin Connect Mobile app, the Edge Explore 1000 offers live tracking, incoming call and text alerts, social media sharing, weather, wireless uploads, and sending/receiving courses.
The Edge Explore 1000 retails for $449.99 and is available to order now.
