Petzl Teams Up With Edelrid For Climbing Ropes

Petzl Edelrid Climbing Rope

Petzl has joined forces with Edelrid, the popular German maker of ropes and climbing equipment, to present a new international collection of dynamic ropes. Petzl is traditionally known worldwide as a producer of static ropes for professional use, but has sold dynamic climbing ropes for the North American market. Now hoping to go international with a full collection of climbing ropes, the company chose Edelrid as their manufacturing partner.

The new Petzl climbing ropes are designed and manufactured by Edelrid, all based on Petzl’s specifications. The ropes will officially be launched at the Outdoor Show in Germany next month and will hit the shelves by January 2014.

Edelrid produces millions of meters of climbing rope each year, with every single centimetre bluesign certified. Edelrid was the first rope manufacturer in the world to ensure that all its ropes adhere to the stringent bluesign standard.

No word yet on exact number or types of climbing ropes in the new Petzl collection but Edelrid is getting ready to launch a new rope of their own next month. The 8.6 mm Corbie is set to become the thinnest single rope on the market. It’s super light, water resistant, and has great handling thanks to the high-quality finishing process. This new Edelrid climbing rope may make the difference between success and failure on your super hard sport project this summer.

Edelrid Corbie

The small 8.6 mm diameter is possible thanks to the use of a braided core. This core construction is like a rope within a rope and serves as an additional safety measure. I could see using two Corbies as half ropes for ice climbing, as it would be nice to have that single rope security in each without the weight, especially if climbing with two seconds.

Would you feel comfortable climbing on an 8.6 mm single rope?
