My latest obsession is Skida–a Vermont based company that makes colorful and fun hats, neck warmers, and accessories to keep you warm during your fall and winter outdoor activities. Don’t worry guys–there are plenty of choices here for you, too.
Started by Vermont skier Corinne Prevot while she was still a student at Burke Mountain Academy, Skida quickly turned from a simple hobby making hats for her teammates and friends into to a full on business. Her mom, Margie, stepped in to help out while Corinne went through college, finally setting up HQ in Burlington upon her graduation in 2013.
The main Skida collection includes a variety of hats ($36), headbands ($16), neck warmers ($24) and other accessories–all available in a variety of fun and colorful prints. Puppies, anyone? The hats are made from a printed poly-blend outer fabric and fully lined with a cozy mid-weight fleece, working together to wick away moisture and cut the wind. The hats are perfect for chilly runs, under a helmet, or even just walking around town.
The neck warmers us the same printed poly-blend outer fabric to wicks away moisture, but are lined with a Polartec micro-fleece that is soft and warm against your face. For those that prefer knits, Skida features a 100% cashmere collection with hats and scarves made in Nepal.
Production is all done in northern Vermont (apart from the cashmere collection), supporting the local cottage sewing industry in a region with a rich history of garment manufacturing. It remains important for Skida to work with the local community in a number of ways. Another example is the Friends of Liz collection–all the proceeds go towards supporting Liz Stephen, Cross-Country ski racer from Montpelier, in her 2014-2015 winter season. With multiple World Cup podiums, World Championship top-ten finishes, and Olympic performances under her belt, Liz is among the top ranks of distance Cross-Country ski racers in the world.
You can order Skida products from the company website. Needless to say these would make a great holiday gift for just about anyone on your list.
